  • Facilitate consistent and meaningful family contact, especially where emotions or unresolved conflict hinder cooperation.
  • Provide culturally competent mediation rooted in empathy, fairness, and conflict resolution.
  • Support the emotional wellbeing of children by maintaining bonds with both parents where it is safe to do so.

Key Components of the Service

Mediation Support (Culturally-Informed)

  • Neutral and trained mediators who understand cultural nuances and family dynamics within minority communities.
  • Focus on de-escalating conflict and establishing workable parenting and contact arrangements.
  • Sessions conducted in-person or virtually, depending on the family’s needs.
  • Focus areas: parenting agreements, communication strategies, contact planning, and emotional readiness.

Emotional Support and Signposting

  • One-to-one emotional check-ins for parents or carers struggling with anger, grief, or frustration.
  • Guidance on accessing legal aid, mental health services, or faith/community support.
  • Psychoeducation on the impact of conflict and parental separation on children.

Family Time (Safe Contact Arrangements)

  • Supervised or supported contact in a safe, neutral setting.
  • Child-centred approach that fosters positive interactions with the non-resident parent or estranged family member.
  • Clear structure, risk assessments, and ground rules to ensure safety and emotional security.
  • Feedback provided (where appropriate) to social workers or referring agencies.

  • Mileage Policy: 45p/mile applies for families outside Birmingham.
  • Weekend and evening slots available to accommodate working families.

  • Self-referrals from parents or carers.
  • Referrals from Local Authorities, schools, social workers, or family courts.
  • Community organisations or faith leaders.
