Parenting Support for Minority Families Project
Our parenting education initiative addresses the critical need for culturally aware parenting and education among low-income and ethnic minority families. With research indicating approximately 47,000 Children in Need in the West Midlands; and ethnic minority children disproportionately represented on Child Protection Plans; our project aims to reduce these disparities by equipping parents with essential knowledge and skills.
Our project will support 60 families through structured sessions that will be delivered over 40 weeks; each lasting 2 hours; covering key topics such as understanding UK culture and parenting systems; managing cultural conflicts; child development; accessing community resources; parenting expectations; safeguarding; recognising abuse; proactive parenting; and managing challenging behaviours.
These sessions will be led by experienced social workers and tailored to the specific needs of each family; ensuring the education is relevant and impactful.
Feedback collected at the end of each session will be reviewed and applied to continuously improve the program; ensuring it evolves to meet the families’ needs effectively. This culturally sensitive approach will empower parents to provide safer; more nurturing environments for their children; addressing the root causes of safeguarding concerns before they escalate.
By offering this targeted support; our initiative aims to mitigate the disproportionate representation of ethnic minority children in social care; fostering stronger; more supportive communities. This project not only addresses immediate educational needs but also contributes to long-term positive outcomes for ethnic minority families by reducing safeguarding risks and enhancing parenting practices. Through these efforts; we aim to create a safer; more inclusive environment for all children; ultimately strengthening the fabric of our community.
